UmiRedi is the Solomon Islands' climate and disaster resilience platform, provided for the
Solomon Islands Government's Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management &
Meteorology (MECDM), and developed, hosted and operated on its behalf by Traseable Solutions
("Traseable", "we", "us"). This Privacy Policy explains what information the UmiRedi mobile app
(Android package com.traseable.umiredi) and the UmiRedi web portal collect, how it is
used, and the choices available to you. Save the Children Solomon Islands supports the UmiRedi programme as a partner organisation; MECDM is the owner of the service and of the information it holds.
By using UmiRedi, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Setup information
When you first open the app, you're asked for your province, ward, gender, age range, whether you have a disability (used for inclusive programme planning), and whether you're setting up on behalf of a household, community, or school. The gender question includes a "Prefer not to say" option. This information is linked only to a random identifier generated on your device (a "device profile ID") — we do not ask for your name, phone number, or email address to use the core app.
1.2 Location data
With your permission, UmiRedi accesses your device's precise or approximate location to show nearby hazards on the map, relevant early-warning alerts, and offline map layers, and to automatically tag the location of an incident report or assessment you choose to submit.
1.3 Photos, video, and voice recordings
Incident reports, hazard assessments, and facility assessments let you attach photos, short videos, and voice notes as evidence. Anything you attach to one of these reports is uploaded to our servers as part of that report and may be visible to the government agencies and response partners who review it. Incident reports also have optional fields for your name and phone number so response agencies can verify and follow up; leave them blank if you prefer. They are never shown publicly.
1.4 Push notification token
If you allow notifications, we register a device token with Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) so we can deliver emergency alerts, weather warnings, and other time-critical notices to your device.
1.5 Family Safety Plan & Emergency Contacts — stays on your device
1.6 Device and usage information
The app records a random device ID, your device model, Android version, app version, language and time zone, and basic usage events (for example which screens you open, content you view, and quiz progress). We use this to make sure the app works on the devices people actually have, to see which features are useful, and to send alerts to the right devices. The app's update and crash-recovery components also exchange basic technical information (app version, general device type) with our update server so we can deliver bug fixes without requiring a full reinstall.
1.7 Google services
UmiRedi uses Google Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver push notifications and Firebase Analytics to measure app usage and notification opens. Google receives your push token and an app-instance identifier for this purpose. UmiRedi shows no advertising, does not use the Android advertising ID, and does not allow Google to use this data for advertising.
2. How We Use Information
- To show you relevant hazard information, alerts, and offline maps for your area
- To route incident reports, hazard assessments, and school/community plans you submit to the relevant government agencies and disaster-response coordinators
- To deliver push notifications for emergency alerts and warnings
- To maintain and improve the app, including diagnosing crashes, understanding which features are used, and shipping fixes
- To produce aggregated, de-identified statistics (e.g. how many households in a province have completed a preparedness plan) to help MECDM plan resilience programmes
3. Who We Share Information With
Information submitted through incident reports, hazard/facility assessments, and community or school plans is shared with MECDM, relevant provincial and national disaster-response agencies, and authorised partner organisations (e.g. NGOs coordinating relief), solely for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery purposes.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with advertisers or unrelated third parties. Data is hosted on servers operated by Traseable Solutions on MECDM's behalf. Service providers that process data for us, such as Google (push notifications and analytics, see 1.7), act only on our instructions.
4. Your Choices
- Permissions: Location, camera, microphone, and notification access can be granted or revoked at any time in your device's Settings. Some features (e.g. map-based hazard layers, media attachments on reports) won't work fully without the relevant permission.
- Local data: Family Safety Plan and Emergency Contacts data can be cleared at any time from within the app, or by clearing the app's storage/uninstalling it.
- Delete your data: In the app, open Profile and choose Delete my data. This removes your profile (province, ward, gender, age range, role), your device record and push token, your quiz, points, badge and quest progress, and your usage records from our servers. You can also email [email protected] with a description of your device and we will remove it for you. Incident reports and assessments you already submitted are kept as disaster-response records, but your name, phone number and the link to your device are erased from them.
5. Data Security & Retention
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures — including encrypted transmission (HTTPS) between the app and our servers — to protect information in our care. Incident reports and assessments are retained for as long as needed to support disaster response, recovery, and historical/statistical analysis by MECDM, with any submitter name, phone number and device link removed on request. Profile, device and usage records are kept until you delete them or they are no longer needed for running the service. Locally stored Family Safety Plan and Emergency Contacts data is retained only on your own device until you delete it or uninstall the app.
6. Children's Privacy
UmiRedi is intended for people aged 13 and over, including secondary-school students using it with their teachers. It is not directed at children under 13: the setup screen asks for an age range and does not continue for users under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app and provided information, email [email protected] and we will delete it. For users aged 13 and over, the age-range field is used only for demographic and planning purposes and does not identify a specific person.
7. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example as the app gains new features. Material changes will be reflected by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
8. Contact Us
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or wish to make a data request, contact us at [email protected].
